Townsite Brewing Perfect Storm Oatmeal Stout

I'm not a huge stout user (despite being ΒΌ Irish) but I'll happily give anything which falls under the heading 'beer' a try. In this case I was a little disappointed. Townsite Brewing's Perfect Storm oatmeal stout isn't smooth like you expect a stout to be, but very bitter with hints of coffee and a kind of 'burned toast' flavour on the back of the palate which is really off-putting. Other oatmeal stouts I've sampled have a 'weight' to them and some can be almost creamy in mouth-feel, but the strong carbonised flavour wrecked all that. Curiously absent in nose, this 5.5% brew has thirty IBUs and is a very rich coffee colour with low to moderate head retention. Thanks to the bitterness (and I don't mean a hop bitterness), I really missed the sweeter notes of malt which I think would turn it into a much better and more balanced drink. Not Recommended.
